LOTUS, THE GALERIES | Excellent Smart-Casual Dining In The Heart Of The City
THE UPSIDE: really lovely ambience and great flavours. An excellent inner-city hideaway in a convenient location.
THE DOWNSIDE: the dumplings aren’t in the same league as Din Thai Fung.
As far as shopping centres go, The Galeries is up there with one of the most ambient I’ve seen. The whole centre is quite boutique and the food and shopping selection is excellent. While The Strand arcade might have more historical charm, The Galeries is a modern gem. My standout feature of the whole complex is the low lighting; something I think should be implemented in all shopping centres and malls. The strong aesthetic throughout the building is a big win for me and one of the reasons I keep going back.
Now, back to Lotus. I’ve dined here a few times and it’s a great place for a casual catch up in a nice setting. Great if you’re looking for all the ambience of a fine dining restaurant without the fine dining bill. It’s very reasonably priced, the food is delicious, and Asian-inspired as the name suggests, and the staff were friendly. There is plenty to choose from on the menu, and while I made note of the dumplings not quite matching what you get at the renowned Din Thai Fung, everything else is mighty tasty.
It always seems quite busy, so there’s a bit of a buzz around, but it’s a big space so you don’t feel on top of other diners and it manages to maintain an intimate feel and isn’t noisy. Very little wait time and no rush to move on even after we finished our food and stayed a while to chat. That's a big plus for me, and another of the reasons I keep going back.
Highly recommended, especially if the busy – brightly lit city – has fatigued you and you’re looking for somewhere to regain a bit of calm.
