THE GANTRY | On Point Dining Experience in a Beautiful Location
THE UPSIDE: the overall experience was completely satisfying – from the food and service to the wine selection and ambience, The Gantry ticked all boxes.
THE DOWNSIDE: if you can call it a downside, the food coma after the 7 course degustation sent me straight to bed afterwards – so just don't plan to go out dancing after this one!
I’m very enthusiastic about my first dinner at The Gantry. I wanted something special, without being too fussy or pretentious, something elegant as well as satisfying, a sense of vibe and fun, while maintaining a certain sophistication. Not too much to ask, right? - and, I was impressed.
We had the 7 course degustation with matching wines, which I highly recommend and think is excellent value for money. Portion sizes are plentiful, not stingy like they can be elsewhere, and the wine pours were generous and our waitress really looked after us and helped make the night more enjoyable. That's a big tick right there also! So easy to do, with attention to detail and a bit of personality, and yet many places don’t strike the right note here. Thankfully for us, The Gantry are getting it very right.
The chef, Joel Bickford, has made a move from one of my favourite parts of NSW, the Southern Highlands, and his time spent at Biota shows in the menu – lots of texture and earthy elements in the dishes, and you won’t leave hungry. The Kangaroo tartare with crispy sesame crackers was a favourite for us; but it’s genuinely hard to pick a favourite as we loved everything.
The room is ambient and set on Pier One with a great central bar on arrival and an outside area with spectacular views looking back to the Harbour. The mood is intimate and private with a bit of buzz.
I also like a place that isn't afraid to light a candle for someone’s birthday, without necessarily getting the whole restaurant involved for a sing-a-long.
We were even treated to a surprise 8th dish during our degustation, as apparently the chef could see us smiling and enjoying ourselves – a very nice, unexpected touch.
Don’t even think twice about a reservation here, do it and you won’t regret it. The right balance of sophistication and relaxation – and oh, if you have access to any of the many beautiful wharfs around Sydney, consider getting there by water taxi. We did, and it was a great top and tail to the night.
Beautiful dining experience!
