CAROLS UNDER THE BRIDGE: Christmas Cheer in a Gorgeous Location

CAROLS UNDER THE BRIDGE: Christmas Cheer in a Gorgeous Location

THE UPSIDE: stunning harbourside location, family friendly, not overcrowded and free.

THE DOWNSIDE: the wait for food

Bradfield Park in Kirribilli is nestled right underneath the Harbour Bridge and looks back on the Opera House. You really couldn't ask for a better location to host a picnic or small festive event such as Carols Under The Bridge.  Now running for 12 years, the event is hosted by the local church and has a lovely community feel. Big enough to have a great vibe and feel like something special is happening, and yet still small enough to not lose its intimacy and friendliness; no pushing and shoving, no masses of people and it’s easy enough to find somewhere decent to sit. And it’s a huge advantage that every spot has a view.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit and will definitely return. We set up a small picnic before sunset and enjoyed watching kids with their faces painted running around and enjoying the festivities. There’s a full nativity display complete with camels and a donkey and a live jazz band gets the entertainment going in the early evening. The main event, of course, is the carols which follow the jazz. A lovely selection of all the favourites are performed by a band and a few singers. The atmosphere is really warm and celebratory and I couldn’t help but sing along to a few of my personal faves as I soaked in the scene.

There is a good selection of food trucks and amenities. Turkish gozleme, crepes, donuts and coffee are all on offer if you haven't had a chance to pack your own picnic. You may just have to wait a while though as all the outlets were popular. The location is very easy to get to since Milsons Point train station is a short walk away, and there is also the ferry nearby. Parking is limited but not impossible.

This is the kind of Christmas affair that embraces the spirit of the season without overdoing it. Relaxed, fun and there’s just enough cheer. If you’re looking for a way to soak up a bit of the best Christmas has to offer, I highly recommend adding Carols Under The Bridge to your calendar next year.

There is a sense of community and its great for couples, families or groups of friends. Truly, something for everyone.

Highlight – there was something rather memorable about seeing a group of camels and a donkey, bathed in Christmas lights, parade around the park with the Opera House glistening behind them.
